Beginner questions
I'm level 4. I just started playing today.
1) All the doors for all the buildings I've seen are closed. Do you ever need to open a door to go inside? If so, how? 2) What are the red and green dots on the compass? 3)I had 2 spell skills in the skill bar - a weapon spell and heal target. When I accepted a quest in Wizard's Folly, those 2 skills were replaced with other skills. Do I still have access to the previous skills or are they gone? If I go to my skills / attributes page, I don't see those 2 skills anymore. 4) How do you remove a skill from the skill bar? In the skills /atributes page, it says to go to a town to remove a skill, but it doesn't say how. 5) Where do I get more bags? 6) When you kill an enemy he often drops something. Do you have to pick it up immediately or can you leave the area, and then come back and it will still be there? Thanks. |

1) if the door is closed, you are either not allowed in, or you have to open it somehow
2) red dots are enemies, green dots are allies/NPCs 3) you changed the secondary profession skills you are borrowing, go back to the person who taught you the skills you lost and they will give them back to you, you will have to choose a secondary profession before leaving pre searing.....how did you get a weapon spell in pre searing?those are factions skills 4)click and drag the skill out of the skill bar in the window accessible by pressing k 5) buy them from merchants 6) pick it up, if you leave the zone it will disappear, but as long as you dont, it will stay there |

1)No, all doors are closed and can't be opened by the player.
2)Green dots are allys, red dots are monsters. 3)Yes, you still have access to them. There shouldn't be any reason why you can't see those skills anymore unless they're under a menu that is collapsed. Click on the little + next to an attribute to expand it and show all the skills you have. 4)When you're in a town, just press K, go to your skillbar at the bottom of the window and drag the skill icons off the bar. You can then drag new skills in the empty slots. 5)You can get a belt pouch from a collector outside Ascalon City. You can get 2 more bags once you hit "post searing". Right now you're in "Pre searing" Ascalon which is the tutorial area. Eventually you'll hit the academy and be transported to "post searing". You'll know once this happens, trust me. 6)You have to manually pick up all items that drop, otherwise you'll lose them. The only exception is when you finish a mission (which it sounds like you haven't encountered yet). If you complete a mission a pop-up window will appear allowing you to claim any items you forgot to pick up. It doesn't do this for money though. Also, as a future reference, you can press f10 at any time in game and be linked to wiki.guildwars.com. There they have info on skills, equipment, monsters, and all sorts of other stuff. It's a big help to veterans and newbies alike. EDIT: Quote:

1) I'm not quite sure what you mean by doors. Gw areas are split by zones *portal looking thingies*. If you ever need to open a closed door there should be a lever near by 2) The green dots are you and your teammates. the red dots are enemies 3) They are not gone. When deciding a second profession you can experiment with different skills. when you have finally made a choice, the second profession that you choose will retain any skills you have learnt. 4) go to a town. press K you should see your skill bar. Click and drag out the skill you want to remove 5) bags can be bought from a merchant 6) you may leave it. After 10 minutes however it becomes a free for all item, meaning anyone can pick it up. If you zone, your item will disappear, and the level resets. good luck!!!! Last edited by Turtle222; Jan 28, 2008 at 03:07 AM // 03:07.. |

1: only one door will open in presearing - the gate to the north - you need someone to help you open it. Other than that any doors that are closed stay closed.
2: ... 3: I think he means attack skills - but already answered 4: correct -but you have to be in a town to do it - as you already found out it won't let you in an explorable area 5: you can get a belt pouch from a collector outside the gate at ascalon - he wants 5 skale fins. The only other bags in pre searing are charr bags that drop from the four bosses in the northlands - you can usually buy them from other players for around 900g (or you can wait until you got to post and buy cheaper bags from the merchant) 6:......... |

Thanks for the replies. Most of the questions were answered except #2. I think several of you didn't understand what I was asking, so I will try to clarify:
2)I went from Ascalon to Ashford Abbey where I got a quest to go to Regent Valley. I had 2 skills at this point: 1 increased the power of my attack and the other I used to heal myself. On the way to Regent Valley I learned 2 skills so I could charm / comfort a pet. These skills occupied slots 3 and 4. So I charmed a pet and continued to the valley. At some point, I'm not sure when, I learned 2 new skills. One I called a "weapon spell" earlier. Apparently that's not the right term. I forget its name. It had a circular gray icon, did about 25 pts damage and always knocked the enemy down. The other skill was called "Heal Target." These skills occupied slots 5 and 6. I think I got both at the same time. I didn't notice them until I got back to the merchant near the gate to Ashford Abbey. After I sold some stuff to the merchant I left for Wizard's Folley. An npc in the ice area near Wizard's Folley was doing some kind of experiment and said she would teach me some elementalist skills if I would kill some monsters for her. So I agreed. I then saw my 2 newest skills, in slots 5 and 6, disappear. I then saw 3 new skills appear which I still have: Aura of Restoration, Glyph of Lesser Energy, and Fire Storm. The 3 new skills were in slots 5 – 7 so I lost 2 skills. There are 8 slots. It doesn't make sense to me that skills in 2 slots would be removed to make room for new skills without any warning. After killing the monsters, she said I could choose Elementalist as a secondary profession. I told her I would have to think about it. So I haven't chosen a secondary profession yet. I want to make that clear. I didn't choose a secondary profession before or after killing those monsters and I still haven't chosen one. Some of you thought I had. Also, the 2 missing skills are NOT listed in the Skills / Attributes window. The Skills / Attributes window lists 5 categories: Beast Mastery, Energy Storage, Fire Magic, Marksmanship and Wilderness Survival. I clicked the plus sign next to each and I can't fine the 2 missing skills. I'm only level 4 so I don't have a long list of skills to read through – just 7. Also, that window doesn't have a scroll bar. So it's not like I just haven't scrolled down far enough to see the 2 missing skills. There is no scroll bar or tabs or arrows that might reveal more skills. There's just the 7. Are you limited to 8 skills in GW? Even if you are, that doesn't explain why a skill would be deleted instead of using an empty slot. Slot 8 is still empty. I will try retracing my steps to see if I can learn them again, but I'm not sure where I learned those skills. Also, I don't understand why the skills appeared on the skill bar at all. Shouldn't I be allowed to choose which skills I want on the skills bar? 5)Is that the collector outside Ascalon City where you meet Gwen, the girl who lost her flute? Or is he outside the other gate? Thanks. |

You lost those skills because they belong to a different secondary profession.
In guildwars you choose 1 main profession, and you can take 1 secondary profession(which you can change later in the game). You can only bring 8 skills with you from your primary/secondary class. |

Eight skills in the eight slots, you can have more than that in your 'skill pool', but can only 'carry' eight on your skill bar.
It seems to me that you're getting skills from the secondary profession quests. In this case, you can only have skills from your primary profession and one other profession. So, if you talk to a ranger trainer and get the ranger skills on your bar and then talk to an elementalist trainer, and they give you skills, the elementalist skills will replace the ranger ones (that is, if you're primary is neither of those). |

It seemed to me that u had Frenzy and Healing Signet first (meaning u r a warrior primary), then u learned ranger skills, and then u learned monk skills (bane signet and orison of healing), and then u learned some elementalist skills. Now I'm not sure about this, but I don't think u can have skills from more than 2 professions at once, so maybe that's y u lost 2 of ur skills. If u choose monk as ur secondary profession, then u should get those skills back. However, the atributes that u have don't make any sense! What's ur primary atribute? What's ur primary profession? |

When you're back in a town, you should be able to drag those ranger skills you 'lost' back onto your skillbar(Press K).

Wow, you guys are fast. I think Sir Tidus is right. The monk offered me a quest so I took it. He must have taught me 2 skills. Power shot is a ranger skill. Bane signet and orison of healing are the 2 missing skills. Then I took a quest from an elementalist and lost 2 skills. So it seems that you can learn secondary skills before you actually decide on a secondary profession, but you will lose some skills if you do that. So I need to decide what quest givers to avoid. I can go back to the monk then and get those skills back I hope.

Once you pick a secondary profession (which is required in order to leave pre searing, by the way) you'll get all those skills back and lose the opportunity to learn skills from other professions for the majority of the game. Also, you can talk to any of those NPCs again to get skills back as long as you haven't taken a secondary profession.
Example: You currently have ranger and elementalist skills. You then switch to monk as part of a quest. You can go back to the NPC that gave you the elementalist skills and get them back again. It's good to experiment with skills from all of the professions if you're not sure which secondary to take. |

If you're a primary ranger, there should be no reason why you can't access those skills. Are any of the little menus closed in the K window? Like do you see the catagory "Beast Mastery" with no skills under it. If you do, click on that catagory and you'll see the skills. This will happen if you don't have any points invested in that attribute.
You're sure those were ranger skills you lost? |

While you're in presearing and before you have picked a secondary, you can swap out skills like that. But once you pick a secondary, you can't do that and you will be able to leave presearing. You can go back to the NPC that gave you the elementalist skills and get them back again. You'll lose the monk skills if you do this. Forgot to mention that, my bad. |
